Best Microneedling Pens for Home Use (2026), Ranked by Score
No microneedling pen sold for home use is FDA-cleared, and none of the nine we have reviewed scores above 6 out of 10. The highest score is the Derminator 2 at 5.8, a $149 corded console from the Czech Republic. It leads because it scores 6 or more in five of the seven categories, where no other home pen manages more than two. It does not lead on safety: its safety score is 4. Behind it, the ranking is mostly decided by the safety cap. Every Dr. Pen model sold for home use is covered by Health Canada’s 2021 advisory, which caps its safety score at 3 out of 10. Evidence is weak across the board, at 2 or 3 for every pen, and the first year costs anywhere from $169.90 to $1,185.
This page ranks by the overall score in each review and nothing else. Nobody at this site has used any of these pens; every score comes from documented evidence, linked in each review.
The ranking
Year one is the pen plus 13 cartridges, one per full-face session every 4 weeks, at the prices each review recorded on October 6, 2026. Ties share a rank and are listed alphabetically.
| Rank | Pen | Overall | Price | Year one | Depth | Power | FDA / Canada | Review |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Derminator 2 | 5.8 | $149 + $29.30 US shipping | $186.05 | 0.25–2.5 mm | Corded (mains console) | Not cleared / no Canadian licence | Review |
| 2 | Dr. Pen A10 | 5.0 | $99 | $169.90 | 0–2.5 mm | Battery; corded mode disputed | Not cleared / covered by 2021 advisory | Review |
| =3 | Dermapen HOME | 4.6 | $899 | $1,185 | 0.2–0.5 mm | Battery (two) | Not cleared / no Canadian licence | Review |
| =3 | Dr. Pen A11 | 4.6 | $319 | $396.94 | 0–2.5 mm | Cord or battery (sellers disagree) | Not cleared / licensed 2024–25, lapsed | Review |
| =3 | Dr. Pen M8 | 4.6 | $199 | $270.50 | 0–2.5 mm | Battery | Not cleared / named in 2021 advisory | Review |
| =3 | Hydra Pen H3 | 4.6 | $149.90 | $214.77 | 0–1.0 mm | Battery, runs on cable | Not cleared / covered by 2021 advisory | Review |
| =3 | Korabeauticals V2 | 4.6 | $179.99 | $212.48 | 5 settings, no mm range published | Corded per its instructions | Not cleared / no Canadian licence | Review |
| 8 | Dr. Pen M8S | 4.5 | $299 | $376.94 | 0–2.5 mm (other sellers) | Battery; corded mode unverified | Not cleared / covered by 2021 advisory | Review |
| 9 | Dr. Pen A6S | 4.4 | $249 | $320.50 | 0–2.5 mm | Cord or two swappable batteries | Not cleared / named in 2021 advisory | Review |
The arithmetic for each year-one figure is in its review. Three need a note. The Derminator figure leaves out $29.30 of shipping and at least $33.21 of US import charges. The A10 figure is drpenofficial.com’s pen-plus-20-cartridges bundle; at drpenofficial.store the same year is $99 + 13 × $2.50 = $131.50. The Dermapen HOME ships with five cartridges, which brings its year to $1,075.
Canadian status is from Health Canada’s device database, searched October 6, 2026. The 2021 advisory is about Dr. Pen only.
That thread, “Best at home microneedling pen?” in r/Microneedling, asks for recommendations from “US or Canada”. For a Canadian buyer, six of the nine pens above sit under the advisory or a lapsed licence.
Where the scores split
Safety caps do most of the work. A pen with no clearance and honest labeling can score at most 6 for safety; a pen under a regulator advisory can score at most 3. Safety carries 20% of the overall, so the gap between the two caps is worth up to 0.6 points on the overall before anything else is counted. The highest safety score of any home pen is the Dermapen HOME’s 5.
Evidence is low everywhere. No home pen scores above 3, because none has a published study of its own and most carry at least one claim their own pages or the FDA record contradict.
Value and service separate the rest. The top two both score 8 for value, the highest value score on this list. The A10 then edges out the other Dr. Pen models on service and privacy, because it is sold by a different store.
Here is how the Derminator 2’s 5.8 is built:
| Category (weight) | Score | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Safety (20%) | 4 | 0.80 |
| Build (15%) | 6 | 0.90 |
| Performance (15%) | 7 | 1.05 |
| Value (15%) | 8 | 1.20 |
| Service (15%) | 6 | 0.90 |
| Privacy (10%) | 6 | 0.60 |
| Evidence (10%) | 3 | 0.30 |
| Overall | 5.75, shown as 5.8 |
1. Derminator 2: 5.8
Suits a home user who wants button-set depth and low running costs, is happy with a corded console on a table, and can wait for shipping from the Czech Republic.
Its build score of 6 is the highest on this list. The manual describes a drive whose “sole moving part is a magnet” and a Hall sensor that checks needle depth “9000 times per second” (the manufacturer’s figure; no independent test exists). Depth is set in 0.25 mm steps from 0.25 to 2.5 mm, and a year of cartridges costs $37.05.
The caveat is safety, at 4. The manual warns that fitting a single-needle cartridge while the machine is set for a 9- or 12-needle one means “the machine will needle 1 mm too deep”; it also gives a home disinfection routine for reusing cartridges, and FDA’s adverse-event database holds three unverified injury reports naming the maker. Returns “are never accepted”, although a lifetime warranty replaces faulty machines.
The snippet of “Anyone do their own microneedling” in r/SkincareAddictionLux calls the Derminator 2 “fantastic and yes very easy to do at home”. That is reputation, not evidence: PubMed has no study of the device.
2. Dr. Pen A10: 5.0
Suits a US buyer who has decided on a Dr. Pen-branded pen and wants the lowest cost of entry.
Two things put it second. At $99 it ties the Derminator for the top value score (8). And Dr. Pen’s own US store does not sell it, so its service and privacy are scored on drpenofficial.com, which offers a one-year free-replacement warranty and states it “does not charge any restocking fees”. That earns 5 in each, against 4 for every model sold by Dr. Pen US.
Against it: the 2021 Health Canada advisory covers it, and the stores selling it each call themselves official without a manufacturer list to confirm it. drpenofficial.com sells no separate A10 cartridge pack for later years, and sellers give three different answers on whether it runs on a cord.
The poster of “Best Microneedling pen besides Dr. Pen?” in r/DIYaesthetics says they are “not sure which website is authentic since I’m seeing many different ones”. The A10 review found the same problem.
=3. Dermapen HOME: 4.6
Suits someone already having Dermapen treatments in a clinic who wants shallow sessions between visits.
It has the highest safety score of any home pen (5): gamma-sterilized single-use cartridges, a backflow design, and a depth limit of 0.5 mm. It is also the most expensive, at $1,185 for year one (value 4), and its evidence score is 2. The company’s FAQ says “we are proud to hold FDA approval, under the 510(k) Number: K221070”. That number is the professional Dermapen 4, not the HOME, and a 510(k) is a clearance, not an approval.
Returns are refused for any device registered in the app, and the app is required to set it up.
=3. Dr. Pen A11: 4.6
Suits a buyer set on a Dr. Pen who wants the auto-pause charging stand and a backflow-protected cartridge.
Its “backflow protection membrane” keeps it at the safety cap of 3, and it scores 7 for performance. It is the one consumer Dr. Pen that Health Canada licensed, from November 2024 to December 2025; the current licence leaves it off, so the advisory applies again.
Against it: $396.94 for year one (value 6), and Dr. Pen US terms: a 12-month warranty and a 20% restocking fee on change-of-mind returns.
=3. Dr. Pen M8: 4.6
Suits a US buyer who wants a widely sold Dr. Pen at a low entry price.
It scores 7 for both performance and value ($199, $270.50 for year one). It drops to 2 for safety: the seller’s pen page says cartridges “must” be sterilized in alcohol while its cartridge page calls that “entirely optional”, and the M8 is not on the reseller’s list of anti-backflow models.
Health Canada named it in the 2021 advisory. The box contains nano cartridges only, so microneedling cartridges are an extra purchase.
=3. Hydra Pen H3: 4.6
Suits someone who specifically wants serum delivered through the cartridge during needling and only needs shallow depths.
Each cartridge holds a serum reservoir that flows into freshly opened skin, which is why safety is 2: non-sterile cosmetic products go in during needling, the timing the granuloma case reports in the review describe. Depth stops at 1.0 mm. Value is 7, at $214.77 for year one, before serum.
Evidence is 2. The seller’s about page calls its devices “FDA-approved”; no Hydra Pen has a 510(k).
=3. Korabeauticals V2: 4.6
Suits a buyer who values a long warranty and a 90-day money-back guarantee over published specs.
Value is 7 ($212.48 for year one) and service is 6, for a 7-year warranty. Evidence is 2 and privacy 3: seven of its nine feature tiles repeat DermapenWorld’s Dermapen 4 wording, including RFID cartridges, cordless use and 3 mm depth that its own instructions do not describe, and its privacy policy is an unfilled template with more than 20 placeholders.
No depth range in millimeters is published, and no manual is online.
8. Dr. Pen M8S: 4.5
Suits a Dr. Pen buyer who wants the newer three-latch, anti-backflow cartridge.
That cartridge keeps it at the safety cap of 3 where the M8 scores 2. It loses ground on value ($299, $376.94 for year one, against $169 at another US seller) and on evidence: Dr. Pen US publishes neither its depth range nor its motor speed, and other sellers put the speed at 16,000 or 22,000 rpm.
It is covered by the 2021 advisory and is on neither Dr. Pen licence.
9. Dr. Pen A6S: 4.4
Suits a buyer who wants a corded option plus two swappable batteries, which earns it a performance score of 7.
Safety is 2. The A6S is missing from the reseller’s anti-backflow list, and the one detailed FDA report about it describes water that “DRIPPED DOWN THE STEM” of the cartridge into the pen. Its pages repeat the M8’s contradiction on sterilizing cartridges. Year one is $320.50 (value 6).
Health Canada named it in the 2021 advisory, and the US box ships without microneedling cartridges.
Why the SkinPen, Dermapen 4 and Dr. Pen A20 are not ranked
They score higher than every pen above, and none is sold for home use. The SkinPen (6.9) holds a De Novo authorization (DEN160029) and three 510(k)s, all for prescription use; its manual restricts sale to “the order of a physician”. The Dermapen 4 (6.8) is cleared as the DP4 (K221070) for prescription use and is sold only to authorized clinics. The Dr. Pen A20 (5.6) is cleared (K230420) for prescription use on facial acne scars, and Dr. Pen’s US store asks for a license number before it will add one to the cart. All three are compared on professional microneedling pens.
How we ranked
The overall score is a weighted average of seven category scores, each out of 10: safety 20%, build 15%, performance 15%, value 15%, service 15%, privacy 10%, evidence 10%. It is rounded half up to one decimal, so 4.55 shows as 4.6. Pens with the same shown score share a rank. The methodology sets out what each category measures, and compare shows every category score side by side, including the clinic pens.
Safety is capped before anything else is scored:
| Regulatory status | Safety cap |
|---|---|
| FDA-cleared for the exact model | None |
| Licensed elsewhere, not FDA-cleared | 8 |
| No clearance, honest labeling | 6 |
| No clearance, misstated status | 3 |
| Under a regulator advisory or recall | 3 |
Value uses one schedule for every pen: one full-face session every 4 weeks, a new cartridge each time, 13 cartridges a year. A year-one cost up to $200 scores 8, $200–300 scores 7, $300–450 scores 6, $450–750 scores 5, and above $750 scores 4. Pens sold by the same store under the same policies get the same service and privacy scores.
No placement on this page is paid for, and no score was adjusted to change an order.
What to check before buying any home pen
Sterile, single-use cartridges. Look for a stated sterilization method (ethylene oxide or gamma) and single-use labeling. Then read the instructions. Dr. Pen US pages say cartridges “must be sterilized” in alcohol on one page and call it “entirely optional” on another, and the Derminator manual describes reusing them.
Backflow protection. This is a seal or sleeve that stops fluid travelling from the skin up into the pen. A reseller’s guide lists the A11, A8S, A9 and M8S as anti-backflow Dr. Pen models; the Derminator cartridge has a silicone sleeve “to prevent blood or skin treatment serums from entering the device”. The one FDA report on the A6S describes what happens without one.
Real FDA status, not the wording. The FDA says it “has not authorized any microneedling medical devices for over-the-counter sale”. Phrases like “In accordance with FDA authorisation” (on several Dr. Pen US pages), “FDA-approved” or a K-number belonging to another device mean nothing for the pen in front of you. Check the model in our FDA lookup, and read what clearance means.
Returns terms, before you open the box.
| Seller | Returns | Warranty |
|---|---|---|
| owndoc.shop (Derminator 2) | None, outside the EU | Lifetime, factory defects |
| drpenofficial.com (A10, Hydra H3) | 30 days unopened; 90-day money-back after 6 weeks’ use | 1 year (Hydra: 2 with registration) |
| Dr. Pen US (A11, M8, M8S, A6S) | 14 days, sealed, 20% restocking fee | 12 months |
| korabeauticals.com (V2) | 90-day money-back; three conflicting return texts | 7 years |
| DermapenWorld (HOME) | 30 days, but not once registered in the app | 24 months |
What is in the box. The Dr. Pen US M8, M8S, A11 and A6S ship with two nano cartridges and no microneedling cartridge.

FAQ
What is the best microneedling pen for home use? By our scores, the Derminator 2, at 5.8 out of 10. That is the highest score among nine home pens, and it is not a high score: no home pen reaches 6.
Is any home microneedling pen FDA-cleared? No. Every FDA clearance for a microneedling pen is for prescription use, and the FDA says it has authorized none for over-the-counter sale.
Which Dr. Pen scores highest for home use? The A10, at 5.0. The M8 and A11 score 4.6, the M8S 4.5 and the A6S 4.4. The A20 scores 5.6 but is a prescription device.
Which home pen is best value? The Derminator 2 and the Dr. Pen A10 tie for the highest value score, 8 out of 10. Both cost under $200 for the first year on our schedule, before the Derminator’s shipping and import charges.
Why is the SkinPen not on this list? It is a prescription device sold to practices, not a home pen. It scores 6.9 in its review.
