  • Microneedling breaks the skin. It carries risks including infection, scarring, pigment changes and allergic or granulomatous reactions to products applied during or after treatment. The risk depends on the device, the needle depth, hygiene, your skin and your health.
  • Every FDA-cleared microneedling pen is cleared for prescription use only. No microneedling device is cleared by the FDA for home use. Our reviews of home-use devices describe them; they don’t endorse using them at home. See what FDA clearance means.
  • Some people shouldn’t microneedle at all, or only under medical supervision. The FDA’s microneedling page lists people who may not be suitable, including those with active skin infections, cold sores, eczema or psoriasis in the area, a history of keloid scarring, bleeding problems or blood thinners, a weakened immune system, or pregnancy. For most of these groups the advice comes from the fact that clinical trials excluded them, not from studies showing harm. Recent isotretinoin use is on many clinic sheets, but recent reviews have questioned the traditional six-month wait. Our safety and contraindications guide sets out the evidence behind each item. Ask a professional about your own situation.
  • Depth guidance on this site is general. Safe depth varies by person, area and device. Deeper isn’t better, and some facial areas carry blood vessels and nerves close to the surface.
  • If you have a reaction or injury, stop and see a doctor. In the US you can report problems with a device to the FDA through MedWatch. See how to report a problem.

Medical review

Pages that give medical or safety guidance show who reviewed them and when. A page that hasn’t been reviewed by a licensed professional yet says so at the top.

Product information

Device specs, prices and regulatory status can change. We check them on the date shown on each page, but the manufacturer’s current labelling and instructions always take priority over anything we publish.
