How We Review Microneedling Devices
Last updated: October 6, 2026
Every device on this site is scored with the same rubric, from sources you can check yourself. This page explains how.
Our rules
- The scores decide the rankings. No device is ranked or recommended before it’s scored. If a device’s score changes, its ranking changes too.
- Every factual claim has a source. Regulatory status comes from regulator databases. Specs come from manufacturer documents. Complaints and praise come from public, linkable sources. We mark anything we can’t confirm as unverified, or leave it out.
- Nobody pays for a score. Manufacturers and sellers can’t buy a review, a rating or a placement. Any paid or sponsored content is clearly labelled “Sponsored” and kept separate from reviews.
- We report on business conduct, not people. We never publish personal information about anyone, including company owners, staff or customers.
- Companies get a right of reply. Before we publish a significant criticism, we contact the company and include its response.
The scoring rubric
Each device gets a score out of 10 in seven categories. The overall score is the weighted average.
| Category | Weight | What we look at |
|---|---|---|
| Safety & regulatory status | 20% | FDA, Health Canada, TGA and CE/UKCA status for the exact model; sterile single-use cartridges; backflow and anti-contamination design; accuracy of safety claims |
| Build & engineering | 15% | Depth accuracy and consistency, needle quality and gauge, motor or drive stability, reported reliability and failure modes |
| Performance & usability | 15% | Depth range and adjustability, speed settings, ergonomics, corded vs cordless trade-offs, clarity of the instructions |
| Value | 15% | Device price plus the estimated yearly cartridge cost at a typical treatment schedule |
| Customer service & warranty | 15% | Warranty length and terms, refund and returns handling, response times, and the documented complaint record |
| Data privacy & seller conduct | 10% | What personal data the seller collects, its privacy policy, documented incidents involving customer data, and how the seller treats customers in disputes |
| Evidence & transparency | 10% | Published specs and manuals, clinical evidence for the device or its design, and whether marketing claims are honest (for example, “FDA approved” when a device isn’t) |
How each category is scored
- 9–10: best in class, with strong evidence
- 7–8: good, with minor gaps
- 5–6: adequate, with notable weaknesses
- 3–4: significant problems
- 0–2: serious, documented problems, or claims that are false or can’t be checked
Regulatory status
| Status | Safety & regulatory score cap |
|---|---|
| FDA-cleared (510(k) or De Novo) for the exact model | No cap |
| Cleared or licensed elsewhere (CE Class IIa+, Health Canada, TGA) but not FDA | 8 |
| No clearance, honest cosmetic labelling | 6 |
| No clearance, and claims it implies or misstates (e.g. “FDA approved”) | 3 |
| Subject to a regulator advisory or recall | 3, until resolved |
The cap is a ceiling, not a score. A cleared device can still score low for other safety reasons.
Our sources
- Regulators: FDA 510(k), De Novo and MAUDE databases; FDA recalls and warning letters; Health Canada MDALL and recalls; the Australian TGA’s ARTG; EU Safety Gate
- Manufacturers: official spec sheets, manuals, FDA submission summaries and warranty terms
- Legal records: court dockets (PACER, CourtListener), state attorney general actions
- Users: public reviews and discussions (Reddit, Trustpilot, BBB, retailer reviews). We link to original posts rather than reposting them, and we look for patterns rather than single complaints.
- Clinical literature: peer-reviewed studies on microneedling depth, outcomes and complications
Hands-on testing
Where we’ve used a device ourselves, the review says so and describes the testing. Where we haven’t, the review is based on documented evidence and says that too.
Updates and corrections
Reviews are rechecked at least every six months, and immediately when there’s significant news such as a new clearance, a recall or a legal action. Every review shows its last-updated date.
If you think something on this site is wrong, contact us with a source. We correct factual errors promptly and log significant corrections on our corrections page.
For manufacturers and sellers
We welcome corrections backed by documents, such as clearance letters, spec sheets and warranty terms. We’ll update a review when the evidence supports it. We don’t accept payment, free products in exchange for coverage, or requests to remove accurate, sourced information.
